I would like to make a statement concerning the similarity of penal institutions to those institutions of learning, in particular the social dynamics involved. I cannot help but to compare the two, being an educated person, and now experiencing the incarcerated version. There exists a hierarchy that is mirrored between the two. The cliques, the social order and the residual refuse are almost identical and difficult to discern. Ever been bullied in school? It is the grown-up version of this, and equally disturbing. As in schools, it goes almost entirely unchecked, and the consequences are swept up and discarded, not much being made of it after the fact, leaving in its wake an increasing number of broken people…and once again history repeats itself. Nothing learned is absorbed in the end of it all.
