They were perfect spades
And some the shade of fresh cut grass
Some were new grown and new
Flecked at times with their own uniqueness
Plump with proof of ever
Flowing life.
We held them out before us and saw them shine beneath our thumbs
The outstretching vines
The leaves of varying sizes
A dark rooted hear to life
Shadowing growth from earth to green
And the neo of new life
Knowing them perpetuates
And ever growing
All day in the stuffy air of the classroom
With its finely potted sole
Its spirit bursting from each
New growth
I learned the leaves
I found them a part of my world
Delicately bouncing from our scribbles
From branches to root
Our center peace to focus on.
